frequently asked questions

What do the sizes mean and which size is right for me?

The sizes (30", 36", 40" and 45") represent the width of the bridge. Every kayak stabilizer set needs a bridge to operate, as the extension arms slide in and out of the bridge, and the floats slide up and down on the arms. To help you determine what size you need, please check out our handy guide by clicking here.

How much does everything weigh?

The floats weigh 4lbs 3oz each. Because the bridge comes in 4 different sizes, it also had 4 different weights. The 30" weighs 2.07lbs. The 36" bridge weighs 2.48lbs. The 40" bridge weighs 2.76lbs. And the 45" weighs 3.10lbs.

All together, the entire kayak stabilizer set weighs between 13.77lbs and 14.8lbs depending on the width of your chosen bridge.

What are the dimensions of the floats?

Tip to tip, the floats are 36.5" long. They are 7.4" wide and are 8" tall.

What materials are used?

The floats are made using strong polyethylene plastic. All of the metal extrusions and tubing are made of aluminum, as well as the clamps. The u-hooks are made of stainless steel.

Does your kayak stabilizer fit my kayak?

The Bold Ivy Kayak Stabilizer Complete Set will fit nearly any kayak. The only reason there could be limitations is if you have a very short kayak and the stabilizer would interfere with paddling.

If you have any questions about compatibility, feel free to reach out to us by clicking here.

If you have questions about what size bridge to purchase, check out our handy guide by clicking here.

What are the differences between the canoe stabilizer and kayak stabilizer?

The only difference between the canoe stabilizer set and kayak stabilizer set is the clamps that are used. The canoe stabilizer comes with an angle clamp that allows you to clamp the bridge onto the gunwale of the canoe. Because most kayaks don't have a lip to use with an angle clamp, we had to manufacturer a different clamping system for kayaks.

Can the kayak stabilizer expand or get wider?

Of course! At a minimum, a Bold Ivy Kayak Stabilizer Set is going to be whatever width of bridge you decide to buy. But each set contains two telescoping arms. These telescoping arms can be extended up to 20″, giving you an extra 40″ of horizontal stability and safety.

What is the buoyancy rating per float?

The buoyancy rating per float is 27lbs.

What is the recommended speed limit while using the kayak stabilizer?

We recommended that while the kayak is in motion, the bottom of the float touches the top of the water level. This will help ensure little to no lag. However, due to the hydrodynamic shape of the floats, there should still be very little lag if the floats become partially submerged while in motion./p>

We recommend speeds of less than 10mph. If moving faster than that, we would advise you lift the floats out of the water. Higher speeds can cause where the bridge is clamped.

Do I have to screw into my kayak?

Yes. The brackets need to be installed on the kayak with 2 1/4" holes on each side.

Check out our install directions to see just how easy the set is to install.

What's included in each shipment?

Each shipment contains everything that you'll need to get going. That includes two stabilizer floats, a bridge, two telescoping arms, two vertical tubes, and a set of clamps.

Can I find your kayak stabilizer in retail stores?

Currently, we are online only. We are actively growing our dealer network and as we continue to expand into new retail locations, we will add a handy link to our website which shows where you may find our kayak stabilizer sets.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes! We can ship anywhere that mail is delivered.

features

hydrodynamic design

We have designed every square inch of our floats to be as hydrodynamic as possible. Our sleek and smooth lines, along with our choice of polyethylene plastic, allow you to glide effortlessly through the water.

color options

Our customers love to match their canoe or kayak with Bold Ivy floats. That’s why we’ve manufactured different float colors so that you can choose the perfect color.

bridge with telescoping arms

We made our bridge and extension arms out of high-quality anodized aluminum so that you can be assured that they will never fail or break. The extension arms easily slide in and out of the bridge, allowing up to an additional 22″ of extension in each direction. If you couple that with our 45″ bridge, you can have a kayak stabilizer that spans over 7ft!

high-quality kayak adapter clamps

Our clamps are designed to fit directly on top of your kayak. We include everything you’ll need including Rubber-Insulated Brass Rivets if you’re unable to access inside your kayak or reach the bolts at the install location.

upgraded hardware

Bold Ivy provides upgraded hardware for every set. Every Bold Ivy Canoe Stabilizer set contains 17 different parts and 39 pieces, and we made sure to source the best hardware we could find.

installing the kayak stabilizer

1. remove bolts

Remove the quick-release pin allowing access to the bolts. Remove the bolts, washers and nuts from the U-Bracket and set aside.

2. reinsert pin

Reinsert the quick-release pin into the U-Bracket.

3. open jaws

Loosen the knobs to open the jaws, allowing enough space to slide the bridge through.

4. insert the bridge

Slide the bridge through the jaws and tighten the knobs. Allow enough pressure to still be able to adjust the bridge as needed.

5. place clamps & bridge on kayak

Place the clamps and bridge over your kayak in the desired position. Make sure to allow enough space for paddling.

You also want to ensure that the arms are able to adjust as needed, meaning, don't cover the holes on the bridge with the kayak adapter clamps.

6. draw around brackets

Using a pencil, trace around each bracket.

7. release u-bracket

Remove the quick-release pin. Place the U-Brackets back onto your kayak on top of your previously traced locations.

8. drill 1/4" holes

Using a drill with a 1/4″ drill bit, drill directly through the holes of the U-Bracket and through the kayak.

If you do NOT have access to inside your kayak – OR – you won’t be able to reach your install location inside the kayak, we have included Rubber-Insulated Brass Rivets with each order. For these installations, you’ll need to drill a hole using a 1/2″ drill bit. Insert Rubber Rivets into your hole, and proceed with the install.

9. add bolts

With the U-Bracket on your kayak, insert the screw along with a washer so the washer sits on top of the U-Bracket.

Inside your kayak, place the two larger washers so that they will be touching the kayak, and then finally, twist on the nuts.

To tighten the nuts, you may need to use pliers to grip onto the nuts while you tighten the bolts. This will allow for a airtight and waterproof seal.

The installation took a bit of time but I’m pleased with the results. By taking my time, I didn’t make any mistakes. Using my kayak on the ocean is much easier now, especially when fishing. I’ve already received a few compliments and questions about it, so look out for a few orders from northern california!

Unbelieavable quality, especially the floats. I ordered red to match my kayak and it seems like an extension to my kayak. I love it.

The installation took a little over an hour for me because access inside the kayak was a bit challenging. In the end, I was successful. The kayak stabilizer is really special! I primarily use it out on the ocean and has made things a bit calmer especially when it gets a little choppy.

I purchased for my husbands birthday so he would have an easier time fishing out on his kayak. So far he absolutely loves it. He is able to reel in fish but easier now, and he can even stand up if necessary. It’s a fantastic additional to his arsenal. and I feel good about him being safer on the water. Win-win!

I wanted a little more stability with some of the waves I encounter on the ocean, and this stabilizer has helped achieve just that. The floats can be submerged without any problem and I might even try my hand out with some fishing with how stable I feel.

purchased to make ocean fishing a littlte easier. It does just that. Installation wasn’t too bad and getting everything setup at the boat launch is no issue. make sure to take your time during install and leave enough room to paddle. but for my fishing purposes, this thing is amazing and allows me to stand up much more confidently than before.

I’m really impressed with how the boldivy set was made. It’s extremely sturdy and easy to use. Install took a little time, but wasn’t hard. I just wanted to make sure everything was perfect. Having an additional person help makes it easier, especially just to confirm that everything is in the right place, like the brackets. Out on the water, it was nearly impossible to make it tip over.

4 stars because of the price, but 5 for everything else. It’s superb quality but it’s hard to justify the price. Granted, it does seem cheaper than other brands, but that doesn’t matter. I love the yellow floats to match my kayak.

I was hesistant to order just because I wasn’t sure about the install, but Abe talked me through it and it wasn’t hard. Everything is included that you would need, so if you don’t have easy access to the inside of your kayak, there are some rubber pieces that make it possible to install. You still need to drill into the kayak to install the brackets, but even if you decide to paddle without the stabilizers, the bracket pieces have some functionality too. overall, really happy with the purchase and will be showing them off to my friends.
